Word Counter Privacy Policy

The short answer
Word Counter processes selected or pasted text locally, makes no network requests, and never stores or collects the text.
Word Counter counts the words, characters, sentences and reading time of text you select on a page or paste into it — entirely on your machine. Local-first is the whole product, not an afterthought.
What we collect
Nothing. Word Counter has zero telemetry and makes no network requests at all: no analytics, no usage data, no crash reports, no account. It collects nothing about the pages you visit or the text you count. This is enforced in the build, not just promised — a red-line check fails the release if any outbound-network or remote-code pattern appears in the shipped code, and an end-to-end test asserts every extension surface makes zero outbound requests.
What Word Counter stores, and where
- Your settings (reading/speaking speed, which platform limits to show) are stored locally in the browser's synced extension storage under the key
wordcounter.settings.v1, so they follow your browser profile. They contain no text you have counted. - Your language choice (if you pick one instead of following the browser) is stored locally on your device (
storage.local, keywordcounter.locale.v1). It never leaves your machine and is not synced across devices. - A local error log (
storage.local, keywordcounter.errlog.v1) keeps up to 50 recent error summaries — error name and message only, never page content — so you can copy a diagnostics blob into a feedback message yourself. It is never sent anywhere. - The text you count is processed in memory and is never stored, uploaded, or transmitted.
Permissions and why they are requested
Word Counter installs with no access to any website — no host permissions and no content scripts, so it can see no page until you ask it to.
activeTab,scripting— let it read the text you have selected on the current tab when you click the toolbar icon. This is a one-time read of that single tab's selection, with no permanent access and no ability to read pages you have not clicked into.storage— stores your settings, language choice, and local error log (see above).
Remote code
Word Counter contains no remotely-hosted code. All executable logic ships inside the extension package; there is no eval, no external script, and no remote configuration. The text you give it is treated as data, never as code.
Feedback you send us
The extension itself sends nothing. If you want to reach us, help and feedback are handled on the product website; the extension does not contain a reporting form and transmits no diagnostics. The "Copy diagnostics" button in Settings only copies text to your clipboard for you to paste — it makes no network request.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, we update the Last updated date above and revise the extension's listing on the stores where it's published. Continued use after an update means the revised policy applies.
